Education in Anesthesiology

Catherine K. Lineberger, M.D. - Associate Professor - Residency Program DirectorWe are pleased that you are considering a career in anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center. The faculty at Duke are dedicated to training superior clinicians of our specialty and stimulating a lifelong interest in learning. The Duke University training program in anesthesiology offers the triad of excellent clinical patient care, continuing education for all members of our department and research activities designed to bring forth new knowledge. We are quite fortunate to have world-renowned Departments of Surgery and Medicine at Duke University, providing us with a tremendous breadth and depth of clinical material for our practice.

Residency training at Duke University offers a grand beginning for a career in anesthesiology, regardless of your ultimate career plans. Applicants considering a career in private practice will encounter a myriad of clinical experience, ranging from the simple to the quite complex. Those considering an academic career will benefit from the experience and mentorship of our research mentors and resources. Our graduating residents continue to do extremely well, both in terms of locating desirable employment and in achieving specialty certification with the American Board of Anesthesiology.

The physician entering our anesthesiology training program will spend three years acquiring the skills, knowledge and expertise essential to the modern practice of anesthesiology. During the CA-1 and CA-2 years, experience is gained systematically through a block rotation system. An intensive orientation program of didactic lectures and close operating room supervision is designed to enable new residents to progress safely and comfortably through the initial stage of residency. Maximum support is provided and new residents are given expanding responsibility as they progress.

As residents gain experience and confidence they are expected to demonstrate independence and clinical acumen. The first two years of the residency provide comprehensive clinical training. The CA-3 year is structured to meet the needs and interests of each resident. We want to produce anesthesiologists who are clinically skilled, equipped with a wide knowledge base and firmly grounded in the core competencies outlined by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

We welcome your interest and look forward to receiving your application.
