School Education
As stated by Dr. Edward Halperin, M.D., F.A.C.R.,
Vice Dean of the School of Medicine:
The Duke University School of Medicine is a community of scholars
devoted to understanding the causes, prevention, and treatment
of human diseases. We are a group of women and men unswervingly
committed to the highest academic goals; the generation, conservation
and dissemination of knowledge.
The Department of Anesthesiology upholds and supports
these principles. We look forward to introducing you to the field
of Anesthesiology and informing you about our multiple academic
endeavors in clinical care, education and research.
As a second year medical student, you will rotate in Anesthesiology
as part of your Surgery clerkship. During this time we will involve
you in the perioperative care of multiple types of patients as
well as provide you with didactic lectures on the fundamentals
of anesthesiology. You will learn skills such as bag-mask ventilation,
endotracheal intubation and vascular line placement. You will participate
in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care and will
write a case presentation at the end of the rotation. Please contact
Dr. Stuart Grant for more information.
As a third year medical student, you are invited to conduct a research
project in one of the many basic science research laboratories
in our department. Please contact Dr. Richard Moon for more information.
You are also invited to return for a longer fourth year rotation
to solidify your clinical skills, expand your knowledge base and
be exposed to a wider array of patients than is feasible during
the second year rotation.
Please contact Dr. Nancy Knudsen, or Dr. Craig Weldon for more information. You may also visit our Anesthesiology Interest Group section for additional information on a career in the exciting field of Anesthesiology.
