5th Annual Emerging Technologies in the OR and Great Fluid Debate 

Statement of Need

This course will enable the participant to make evidence-based intravenous fluid management decisions in the clinical environments of the operating room, critical care and the emergency room. In addition, it is designed to focus on awareness among anesthesia providers concerning the function, use and limitations of new technology currently being used in the operating suites.

Target Audience

This activity is designed to heighten awareness and knowledge of practicing anesthesiologists, critical care specialists, perfusionists, nurse anesthetists, anesthesiology residents and students.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Analyze the four most used Trans Thoracic Echocardiographic images of the heart.
  • Appraise heart wall and valvular function, filling status of heart and presence of pericardial effusions.
  • Evaluate ultrasound images of peripheral nerves, guide regional needles toward the nerves and select the correct position to deposit local anesthetics.
  • Distinguish all vast benefits and side effects of different pain medications and the appropriate use of the medications in various pain management settings.
  • Demonstrate the most current non-invasive hemodynamic devices, interpret the data appropriately and formulate a better fluid management plan for the patient.
  • Appraise current best practice for intravenous fluid therapy for patients undergoing major surgery.
  • Assess current evidence for best practice for the perioperative care of patients undergoing major surgery.
  • Compare all of the airway devices that are available for intubation and ventilation of patients
  • Select the appropriate airway device that best matches the patient's situation.
  • Demonstrate the best practice on use of the airway devices.
