Patient Care Information

What does an Anesthesiologist do?

It's more than just "putting you to sleep."

  • We care for your breathing, your brain, your heart, your circulation, your kidneys and other important bodily functions during an operation.
  • We give you anesthesia to ensure unconsciousness, prevent and treat pain, and relax your muscles during surgery so the operation can be done.
  • We care for you so that your surgeon can focus on the operation.
  • We care for your pain needs after surgery.
  • We care for patients in the intensive care unit.

The Pre-Admission Testing Clinic

The Pre-admission screening clinic is located in the Duke Clinic building clinic 2D. The phone number is 919-684-8845 and the fax number is 919-681-8484. The medical director is Ron Olson, MD. His phone number is 919-684-2025.

This is a clinic designed exclusively to assess you or your loved one before surgery. You can expect measurement of your vital signs (heart rate, temperature, blood pressure and respiratory rate), an interview with a nurse clinician, and blood work. An EKG and/or a chest X-ray may also be done. Additional tests will be done based on your history, physical condition and the needs of the surgical procedure. The staff will instruct you about what to expect before during and just after surgery. You will get instructions about when to eat before surgery and what medicines to take before surgery.

Please tell the staff if you take any type of diabetic medication or blood thinning medication, especially coumadin or plavix.
