PEGASUS Research Projects

Postoperative Sepsis

The PEGASUS team tested for an association between apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotypes and severe sepsis in surgical patients.

Blood samples, demographic data, baseline clinical data and APACHE II scores were collected from 343 patients after undergoing a major elective noncardiac surgery.

APOE genotyping was conducted and it was found that 34 (9.9%) of the patients developed severe sepsis.

Of those patients, carriers of the APOЄ3 allele had a lower incidence of severe sepsis and spent fewer days in the ICU.
